Humans have been relentless in their search for the perfect solution to Myopia. When you think of an ideal solution, it will bring to mind words like safety, convenience, comfort and aesthetic. In view of the demand for a cure to myopia, several inventions and technologies are being developed - eye drops and genetic modification. At the same time, we want to ask what else we are looking out for.

The first refers to the development of an eye drop. One reported finding of this particular eye drop is able to shrink the size of the eyeball, reversing myopia. The other finding is the use of Atropine (currently used for childhood eye conditions) in controlled amounts. The current issue with these eye drops is trying to discover the safe use of the active chemicals. If this proves successful, whether it is a temporal or permanent solution, it highly increases our chances of finding the cure to myopia.

Secondly, acknowledging a genetic link in the cause of myopia, there has been rampant research on exactly which gene it is. Numerous reports can be sourced online. Identifying the right gene will allow the development of another solution that involves manipulation of the gene, hence preventing or possibly curing myopia.

Foreseeable, with the rapid pace technology is developed; the human capacity to consistently innovate cannot be underestimated. Accompanied with the exponential increases in cases of myopia, the human race is put to the test. Our two-cents worth of suggestions include:

  1. Combining the DNA of animals with superior eyesight with those of humans to develop a higher tolerance to Myopia

  2. A gadget to remind us to rest our eyes regularly when doing near work

  3. Permanent cornea re-shaping devices other than the use of laser or eye drops E.g. Pinching device
In the end, whichever technology is developed, it will require a cultural change. Most importantly, there must be inculcation of good habits so as to make full use of the available technologies to our advantage.
